Synopsis Parenting English: Giving your child a head start in writing.
By Associate Professor Phyllis Chew, Victor Pok
Writing composition is almost akin to solving a series of difficult mathematical problem sums to many children studying in Singapore. Void of ideas, brain freeze and loud sighs of protests. Some children would end up staring at the picture, losing precious minutes during the exam. This is a common source of consternation for many Singaporean children who are trying to ace the composition writing component in the PSLE English Language. Eventually, these children may end up describing the picture in very simple terms, without interesting details or diverse vocabulary.
In this 2 ½ hours interactive workshop tailored specifically for parents of Primary 1 to 3 pupils, parents will be introduced to the theoretical aspects of a child’s academic brain development that affects his or her ability to construct meaning, articulate ideas and respond to the requirements of writing.
In essence, parents will understand the yearly progression and expectation of their child in terms of writing. Examples of what constitutes good writing over the primary school years will also be shown to aid in their understanding. Lastly, parents will also be equipped with age-appropriate activities that they could use with their children in guiding them to be more confident writers.
